in Illinois based on three criteria: (1) median household income (adjusted
for cost of living); (2) educational attainment (% of residents 25 years and
over who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher); and (3) property crime
rates per 1,000 residents (burglary and automobile thefts). For purposes of
these rankings, "places" are incorporated municipalities with populations

A new report says Illinois' big pension fix isn't that much of a fix after
all.
The study from the University of Illinois says the plan does little to solve
the state's overall debt problems.
Researchers project over the next 25 years, the pension debt will be
eliminated, but Illinois' budget deficit will still snowball to $13 billion.
If pension reform hadn't passed, the deficit would've been $14 billion.

1. Illinois grew by 411,399 during the 2000s—a relatively small increase
of 3.3%
The state total population went from 12.4 million in 2000 to 12.8 million in
2010. This increase of 3.3% was substantially smaller than Illinois’
increase of 8.6% during the 1990s, and was considerably lower than the 9.7%
increase during the 2000s in the total U.S. population.
