亚裔姓氏的求职者找工或申请常春藤名校时，被通知获得面试的机率往往比白种人姓氏
者少，不少亚裔为此不惜改掉姓氏，增加与其他族裔竞争的优势。不过此举也引来批评
，纽约州首位亚裔女法官陈翠芳(Dorothy Chin-Brandt)嫁给白人后仍保留原姓，称更
容易与华人沟通，而改名走捷径也是行不通的。
在纽约投身教育逾30年的成丽虹指出，在考试成绩与课外活动表现都同样优秀的情况下
，常春藤盟校的招生官更可能挑选非洲裔、西语裔姓氏的学生，而亚裔更难被录取。他

至于英语有没有用，是否能一技傍身，这种“温饱论”体现的还是中等家庭的教育观，
有点像“学好数理化，怎么不怕”那样，暗含着一种对生存的担忧。
中上家庭，在考虑学英语时，讲究的是一种vision。不是说你的孩子将来能否依靠英语
成功出去刷试管，而是他是否具备无限量发展的这种可能性。这里体现的不仅是经济上
的，而且是精神上的而一种富足。
另外，一门语言不是单纯的翻译或者应用。学一种语言，不可避免的会接触到这种语言
背后的精神和文化。
