一 引言
自从一九八○年代中期以来，笔者有机会在数所大学和研究院里任教、作研究或参与短
期学术交流项目。这些大学和研究院分别属于三个华人社会——香港、中国大 陆和台
湾，及两个西人社会——美国和澳大利亚。本文便是基于我在这些教育和学术机构里讲
解社会理论和比较社会学时对学生的观察和思考。在行文讨论中，我会 作两个层次上
的比较：把华人学生与西方学生进行比较，和把不同华人社会里的学生进行比较。前一
层次上的比较有助于凸现在非西方社会及文化背景下成长起来的 华人学生，在接受西
方社会科学过程中遭遇的一系列特定的困难。后一层次上的比较则有助于我们更仔细及
深入地分辨出这些特定的困难之根源何在。这里所说的 “学生”是广义的，包括社会
科学的新从业者。

（１）对自己语言骄傲是对自己民族骄傲的一种表现。My Fair Lady里面，男主角，对
女主角说，U're dealing with the Grandeour of English Language. 这种骄傲，我
们作为世界上仅存的古老语言，而且是唯一没有进行rebus process的文字用者，应该
感到无比骄傲，不应该有什么＂穷国来的适应别人的思想＂
（２） 中文的phonology，是extremely deprived。。。由于我们有语调来区分意思。
因此，我们的元音和辅音的总体数量是世界上最少的。。。。。
因此，Hindi （印度官方语言）向英文转化的问题在中文中不存在。中文的任何名字和
音节都可以在日尔曼语系中找到相当完美的transcription
事实上，我们现在使用的汉语拼音系统是从德语的transcription借用来的（现代汉语
辞典编纂人王力曾经留学德国）
所以，我个人不人为任何中文名字会给老外带来任何发音困难，只要transcription做

当然我们还是要看到USC在这几年“排名”的进步的，但是你不能
否认UCHICAGO的TOP10 PROGRAM多。
另外希望你不要把 "non-engineering' 和 "dead" 划上等号，否则的话，USC比HARVARD
都好。

但是有一个优化可以把算法运行速度大大提升。
根据 lolhaha 的算法，
1.create hash for each word
2.sort the dictionary by word length.
assume the dictionary become
a[0],a[1]......
find the largest k so that hash(a[0])&hash(a[k])==0,
get max=len(a[0])*len(a[k])
find max i in [2,k-1] so that hash(a[1])&hash(a[i])==0,
compare max and len(a[1])*len(a[i])
next step find max j in [3,i-1]....

我也是文科转的cs，其实还只是转的跟cs交叉的学科。
以前学linguistics的。语言学，知道吧，就是：生物化学跟这个相比，那都不算坑。
phd最少6年毕业，10年的大有人在。毕业然后连postdoc都没得做，毕业直接实业。一
个教职抢破头。而且吧，最tmd操蛋的是，东岸毕业的学生去西岸找不到工作，因为两
岸的语言学思想完全对立，西岸的也一样。
然后，就转了计算方向。然后，就找到工作了，生活小滋润了，跳出火坑了。
我这个人很容易满足，不用跟其他人比，就跟自己以前的专业比，就满足了。

物和cs比是致命的问题。中部高校私立医学院，做科研的教授，工资也就13-15w，这个
还是有经费的前提下。有职务的和有名誉title的教授工资能更高。新AP工资只能到6-
8w，拿到第一个R01才能松口气。K99允许你把自己的工资开到上限7.5w就说明了新AP的
收入水平。另外，医学院做科研的教授可是全年无休。

公，在西雅图地区，目前就职的公司在自然语言处理是很强的。 很多年前做过语言处
理的硕士论文，当时做的很水，而且完全没碰很久。
UW的那个项目更偏重自然语言处理，跟我多年前的背景很符合，而且是本地学校，可以
到学校上课。问题是学费好贵，是GA Tech那个的好几倍。虽然有公司的reimbursement
，但还是要自己掏个几千一万。 |
