去年收到的圣诞礼物。朋友知道我一直想买送给我的。可是她不知道我自己后来在
costco已经买了一套magic bullet了。一直也没有打开过，全新。收到时比较忙，就没
有去退，后来就给忘记了。等再想起来，也找不到gift receipt了。：（而且我到年底
就要海归了，这个东西电压不一样，也没法带回去用。看看能不能转掉。

我觉得上私立还是公立这个选择不是像在网上买东西，看规格，看评论，找最好的
性价比。
而主要是看孩子本身适合哪个系统。私立学校除了很严谨的 prep schools 以外还有很多
类型 。不要怕跟朋友同事的孩子上不一样的学校。应该采纳吸收最适合自己孩子的教
学理念。即使在 prep schools 里面各个学校也有不同的文化，理念，结构，特殊的
program，老师的styles也可能不一样。
以前在私立教书的时候，每年的open house我们要接待很多家长。很多家长们通过各种渠道
了解学校，选择最适合自己孩子的学校。当然首先要了解自己的孩子。再就是多跟校长
，老师聊。如果在孩子入校第一年的时候有一个能inspire他／她的老师，我个人觉得
那是一个很大的加分。再有，学校里面middle management 对学校的质量有很大关系，
所以一定要了解 lower school director, middle school director, or high school
director.

上私校的家庭都应该是很重视教育,家庭条件比较好的.
但也不排除少数超富家庭的纨绔子弟.
较好的私校老师大多是硕士毕业, 像Harker很多老师有
PhD的. 下面这一段是 Orkland College Prep School
"Of our 55 faculty members, 17 have earned doctorates and another 28 have
master’s degrees; in total, 82% hold advanced degrees."
你再查一下公校的老师背景就知道差距了.
公私校还有一个最大的不同是师生比例. 教育经费缩减, 公校的班级Size
越来越大,每个老师要take care 的学生数越来越多.

发帖数: 184 | 5 对的私校没有那么夸张，里面也有很多中产阶级，很多人都是初中或者高中才进私校，
甚至于一些prep school只招grade9+（当然考试会更严格）
私校的好处是：
1.课程压力很重，注意这个和公立学校压力来自父母不同，私立学校老师就对学业的要
求非常严格
2. 学生学到的知识远远超过公立学校。我有朋友小孩上宾州大学就说从prep school出
来的学生对大学适应能力和优秀程度远高于公立高中出来的学生
3. 注重多方面能力培养，这个中国父母本来就做的很好，但是私校的氛围会带动学生
主动性
4.社交圈子，高中的伙伴是一生的伙伴，为什么不帮自己的子女找几个可靠的助力呢？

发帖数: 2358 | 7 学校好坏有两种评判标准， 一种是看学生自己能做什么，另一种是学校能为学生做什
么。
如果你了解MSJ的话，就不会稀奇了。MSJ学校本身资源和教学水平都挺一般的，主要靠
学生自学和课外狂补课， 结果很多小孩最后和在中国长大的父母类似，只是考分很高
，结果美国好的大学根本不鸟，但在uc这种算公式录取人的地方却可以称霸
打个比方，第一个高中进去的都是些自己死读书补课也能考上二本的学生，结果毕业了
果然学生都上了二本，高中只能算无功无过吧 （MSJ)
另一个是入学时或许考分不高(综合考评经济社会家庭等因素）但学生很要强（
personal statement)。 在学校的帮助下，本来有些水平最多毕业能考上大专的，结果
全都上了三本，有些还上了二本， 至于那些原来入学时二本潜力的都去了一本 (
Lowell), 所有学生平均下来或许只是刚踏线的二本，但学校的贡献巨大。
这只是我对于Newsweek排名逻辑的猜测，因为类似的Summit Prep Charter High
每年都排很高，还常年被作为全美charter school的典范， 尽管API完全

的情况。
这个孩子一直是国内教育，成绩不错。可是对美国的申请大学这一套不清楚，课外活动
，奖项比较弱。

发帖数: 51 | 11 那个，我现在已经收到了4个人的要买整套书和咨询考试相关书籍的消息，我想说我已
经跟一个人定好了，那就不一一回复各位网友了。
关于考试相关书籍，对于一个从610考到730的人，我的感受是：
1，别看新东方，有时间也不能这么糟蹋；
2，GMAT数学虽然简单，但是要考高分，尤其是像某些人只扣一分的情况下，咳咳，还
是要多泡CD网，多练难题，咳咳
3，中国人多数败在SC上，我就是这样的，逻辑，阅读基本没问题，数学也还凑合，就
是SC不行，这GMAT的SC不是老纸考托福的那种改错，他根本不是改错，实际上逻辑！就
是看这句话他要怎么表达不ambiguous!
4，书籍推荐，就从我610到730的总结就是，OG10,0G11，PREP，没了。PREP你把SC的正
确答案放里面，打印出来，经常看着点，你就能感觉到底正确的SC是啥样的，啥样的顺
眼了。

发帖数: 7034 | 31 研究了一阵，基本看中一个，这里最后面的Denali Prep Course，地点是Shasta。

先声明我没有Denali的打算，不过这是一个给beginner 的５天课程，比较Denali的一
点是拖sled 上base camp。。这也决定了只有比较早的５，６月trail上有雪的时候才
有课。。
本来考虑的是“Glacier Seminar I: Introduction to Mountaineering”，但这四天
的课程实际training只有一天，不大划算。。当然Denali Prep正经完全的training也
只有两天：第一天上base camp，第二／三天training，第四天登顶并下到base camp，
第五天回家。想看详细itinerary和gear list的跟我说一声。。
选择这个一来是因为没有一上来就提出50／60磅的背包要求，二来是也算比较便宜。。
纠结处更多了，主要是时间紧，现在对自己physical condition 还不够有信心，June
3-7去还得放个鸽子 |

发帖数: 13580 | 32 体能上，最简单的就是背上35-40磅的包hike至少有3000 elevation gain的trail，最
好是用水做负重，下山的时候倒掉。给你个大致的我们的bench mark: 4 miles, 3300
ft, 2小时及格，1:30优秀。不是说你体能达不到就一定不能登，但是你如果能及格就
会有一定的saftey margin。登山不是跑road race，you can't go all out. when
things happen, rescue might not be immediately available, 即使是Rainier，
rescue也经常是days away
技术上，我们一般都很general的教alpine rock & glacier。我们用的教材是freedom
of the hills 8th edition。书的权威性我不做评价，大家见仁见智。我读过的书也不
少。craig connnally的the mountaineering handbook和cosley & houston的alpine

early. Most are late, or they can't disconnect racquet prep and moving,like
a sitter once they get their racquet set their feet stop adjusting, hence
miss the "easy" put away shot... but that's more of mind set I discussed
earlier. |

my glitch in my preparation... (trying to make more time ^_^)
My take on "you have more time than you think" is, in a neutral rally, once
you know if it's to your FH or BH, you should initiate the shoulder/hip turn
and racquet take back. Most WSN has a tendency of gauge where the ball will
land first then start the preparation. You can gauge the ball while turn

, no. neither is wrong. each one has his preference. and let me warn you, each
judge has his preference too:p if you take first step of feather like that,
some judges are gonna say your prep is too late. |

strict schedule or list, but more of a "recommended" list if you want your
student to do reasonably well on the AP exam. This is why most college prep
HS programs include british lit and american lit. Almost always
Shakespeare because that stuff is 100% guaranteed to be on the AP exam...
hehe
Everyone reads Cliff's Notes thou. That was a game-changer when it came to
reading comprehension I think. |
