改了将近半年。现在三个月的job posting刚刚结束，电话面试也都结束了，和hr开会
时，我老公的manager觉得有一个candidate(citizen)是over-qualified，他没法在面
试意见上写“not qualified". HR听了就说那要再等三个月重新开始job posting, 然
后再走一遍程序。老公听了要崩溃，想第二天就辞职，被我给劝住了。其实老公在这个
公司做得不错，从上到下对他和他带的team的工作都很满意，觉得他们是从无到有建立
起了一套体系，尤其是他的老板曾说把我老公招过去是他做的最好的决定。但尽管如此
，这个美国人觉得他要be honest, 那个candidate qualify,他就不能说NOT，尽管不会
真去招他。

发帖数: 18 | 11 我很想知道那些CS牛校的PHD QUALIFY考试到底难度如何？为了避免误解，我想说明一
下，这里我所说的QUALIFY不是提出PROPOSAL（通过后成为CANDIDATE）的那个考试，而
是说考察基本理论知识（比如上过的核心课）那个考试。
我大概看了一些TOP 20牛校的网上说明，很多这些牛校的这个QUALIFY（有的也许叫
PRELIM)都是口试，也就是看上几篇论文，写个报告什么的，老板（ADVISOR)就是主考
，感觉很水啊，如果RESEARCH做的还行，一般老板不会FAIL掉自己学生的吧？估计一般
没什么人因为QUALIFY（PRELIM)不过而没能完成PHD吧？
我自己在一个一般学校的CS系读PHD，感觉QUALIFY很难考，好几门，都是笔试，有个别
门要费很大劲才能过。
我在这里没有说CS牛校不好的意思，我只是很想知道，是不是这些牛CS系都是属于严进
宽出那种形式的？也就是说因为当初ADMISSION招进来的都是好学生，所以除非是自己
不想读，拿个MS走人的。基本上也就想读PHD就最终能拿到PHD了。

qualifying竟然挂了，这面子上真的过不去。毕竟没几个中国学生挂过qualifying
exam。
还让我感觉很糟糕的是，qualifying挂了，真的很对不起这个老师。
这个月初，因为物理系需要个学生材料计算方向的RA，这个老师知道我不喜欢做化学实
验，就推荐我去做这个RA，这样我就可以不用做化学实验并且可以不用做TA了。在和物
理系的老师聊过后，物理系的老师给了我offer，并说按过了qualifying exam的level
2这个级别来给我发工资。
这样子qualifying exam挂掉了，很对不起这个关心我的老师的推荐，感觉给她丢人了
。另一方面，也不好向物理系的老师交行，因为他很可能要因此怀疑我的能力。

另外奥本海默还提到了USCIS最新的关于允许在排期到之前交I４８５的草案。这并不代
表只要I１４０批了就可以交I４８５。而是建立两套日期，一个是现有的VB排期日，意
味着谁的申请可以得到签证名额，另一个日期是所谓的＂qualifying date＂，意味着
谁可以交I４８５申请。其实现在在Consular Processing中，奥本海默给NationalVisa
Center已经提供一个qualifying date，以便提前通知申请人准备材料和面试。USCIS
的草案基本上效仿现有的Consular Processing的程序，让申请人在排期到之前提交申
请，等到排期到时，可以马上批准。
奥本海默一般将qualifying date设在VB排期日后一年。所以如果现在VB排期是２００

不好意思，我是那个挂掉qualify的。惭愧，给中国学生抹黑了。
虽然挂了qualify，很幸运的是，遇上了贵人。经本系一个中国老师推荐，我在物理系
找到了一份RA的工作，跟着物理系的老板做计算。籍此机会，这个学期我修了两门cs的
课：database management system 以及 data structure and algorithms.
1.还没有上cs的课，在cs楼的楼道看到下面这几张照片。

qualify 考试前，我找系里面的director问，有没有什么需要注意的地方，他说让我回
答问题写清楚详细一点，他说因为他们不make a time constrained exam, 所以写清楚
详细很重要
结果这次考试，这个director竟然大大增加了题目数量，而且考试时间也被缩短了，我
考的非常差，很多题来不及做。其他人也考得很差，但是我的情况最严重，我一开始都
把时间用在“写详细”上面了，根本没预料到时间会那么紧。这样一来，估计fail人将
很大程度上取决于谁写得更快，或者挑了些简单耗时短的题目做
我们觉得这样很不公平，现在其他参加考试的人(外国人）也绝得很恼火，大家已经写
信到qualify committee联名抗议，现在还没有人给我们回信。不知道各位faculty觉得
这样有用吗？还是有什么别的 |

Child？
看了之前的讨论，大家意见不一。主要分歧就在"Who lived with you for more than
half of 2009"那条上面。说可以算Qualifying Child的主要有两种说法：
1. 根据后面的Exception to time lived with you里面讲的，孩子在国内算是Travel。
2. 有人提到"Live with you"是法律意义上的live，只要你没有将孩子送人，还是你出
抚养费用，就算live with you。不一定非要物理上live with you。
不知道有没有人试验过算成qualifying child保税的？尤其是第二种说法，有没有官方
解释，什么叫"live with you"？ |

我就好奇，不就是个qualify吗，能说明啥问题。以我个人的读书经历，qualify不就是
博士入学第一年的一个门槛，考及格了不就得了，谁还关心到底考了多少分，谁还关心
谁考第一啊？
而且我观察周围的同学，qualify考的好坏跟科研能力根本没啥必然联系。有的同学第
一次考挂了还要补考，但后来科研照样做的很好。
再说科研能力。科学当然是客观地，但评价一个人科研做得好不好却是主观的。你们都
在研究生院呆过，学生的能力，可不就是老板说你行你就行，说你不行你就不行么。就

做个review，提交一个纸质report；再一个星期后，为自己的report做一个oral
defense。
也说一下我的qualifying exam过程。
我拿到的是jacs上一篇关于电极材料的文章，作者制备了一系列物质，表征了它们的结
构，提出了这系列物质制备的机理，然后将该系列物质组装成电池并且测试了其性能。
在交report之前，我详细地将文章阅读了，感觉整篇文章结构严谨，数据详实，没有什
么错误，我就怎么也提不出什么critical的观点。于是在report里，我就着重于介绍作
者的工作，以另一种形式表达作者工作的严谨和完备性，并简略地加以自己的点评。（
有些同学拿到的文章有明显错误，通过详细阅读这篇文章及它的引用文献，我很感受到
要发一篇jacs是真的有多不容易，并且需要做多少工作。）
oral defense的时候，做完presentation，committe的老师开始提问（committe由三个

发帖数: 293 | 38 我来跟楼主共勉一下吧，因为我有相似的经历。刚开始来美后，对化学兴趣逐渐降低，
最后也是Qualify Exam没过（考试就没过），觉得很丢脸似的，因为好像我是系上第一
个挂掉Qualify的中国学生（不过后来又有好几个*故意*挂掉的）。开始英文不好，TA
也做的艰难，就去混RA，结果把导师也得罪了。但是后来还是坚决就拿了个Master就走
，而没有选择再考。然后立马改学了CS。现在觉得当时没过Qualify实在
是人生一大幸事和转折点。 |

不是热门专业的话，早点跳出苦海没什么不好

专业行不行，只看以前的phd毕业去了哪里，收入多少，还有导师nice不nice，给不给
实习，最后找工作帮不帮忙
别被导师的空话忽悠了
我专业也不错了，EE的，做医学成像方向。但导师不给实习，方向听着好听，其实每天
都是看小白鼠。
几个毕业的只拿7，8万工资，比码工差一大截

下个学期要考qualify了，六门课里选三门，教授们问，学生在黑板前作答，不是做试
卷的形式。现在复习毫无头绪，得知这个学期系里挂了三分之一的人，胆战心惊。请教
各位好心人，应该如何备考啊。除了教科书之外还有什么资料可以看吗？哪儿有讨论关

就会只给你48刀的rewards，不会给你60刀的rewards
用了reards之后，不算qualified purchase，但是可以买会出rewards的东西来滚
free after rewards用rewards买会不会再给你rewards，很难讲，有这样玩的人来说说
吧。 total before reward的数额不会当作qualified purchases
