this is kind of unclear. but if u do some numerical
experiments, you can see, for the 100x100 hilbert
matrix, the off-diagonal blocks have numerical rank
almost < 10.

My question:
if there exist an p*1 vector v, and elements of v is either +1 or -1, then what can I say about the matrix X? X is not only rank-deficient: there should be something more that because v is not an arbitrary vector but an vector of +1 and -1. In other world, the null space of X contains a vector whose elements are either +1 or -1.

本来想写面经的，忽然就很想把我的rank list写一写，明天以后就不能改了，自己按
照自己的原则胡乱排好了就没再改过。借用了docrockville (感谢！)的部分要素并修
改，列了两个表。第一张表打分，内容包括：
location
my general impression
hospital physical plant
work load
ancillary service
electronic records
fellowship placement
do I like the faculty
do I like the house staff
will I fit in
teaching and education
patient population
my intend subspecialty exposure
research opportunities
第二张表简要的列出各项跟benefit有关的细节to help me decide when the scores
are too close. |

部＂会议，赶紧过来发发感慨。
我所在的是一个社区性质的program， 以往的惯例是prematch几乎一半。 今年换了一
位雄心勃勃的PD,只prematch了一个位置， 一个印度女孩。她的step1, step2也就high
80, 但是她在我们这里见习了一个月，给PD的印象非常好，似乎是个很聪明的人，和
别人也和得来。剩下的名额就全部打算match。
ranking meeting 是attending 们已经根据硬指标排好名，我们，包括attending,
residents,nurses,secretaries 先从list里挑出坚决不要的，再把剩下的人分成up
one third, middle one third, lower one third.最后再排基本名次。
作为PGY1，我没有机会见过所有人，大部分时间是听faculty, senior们议论。同时想
去年不知他们怎么议论的我。

list. Preliminary programs are better to be ranked before advanced ones. If
you are matched into an advanced position without preliminary ones, do not
panic...Try scramble first. If the scramble does not work, contact with the
advanced program which matches you ASAP. Usually, PD/PC are very helpful.
There are 3 possibilities in such case:
(1) PD refuses to do anything for you and you are actually unmatched this
year.

发帖数: 704 | 32 I though it explains the ranking algorithms pretty well. The key is the tentative,not the final or fixed, match until all the appliants get over their list and close of the matching process. That's why your ranking list should be based on your own interests or preferences.

都是categorical，面试时也没有特别的关于preliminary的话题。他们来信说“my
sending you this email DOES NOT IMPLY that your application is not

preliminary route as a backup”，然后说了一下preliminary的好处，并且要求我在
ERAS里面加上preliminary的申请，同时告知他们我对preliminary感兴趣。请各位前辈
帮忙看下，如果现在告知program我对preliminary感兴趣，会不会失去被rank到
categorical的机会？从来没有遇到这种情况，请大家不吝赐教，多谢！ |

1. categorical （包括primary IM）的program都rank在所有advanced前面
2. 每个advanced有自己的supplementary list（为preliminary program list）
3. 最后把所有preliminary program rank在advanced 的后面，in case did not
advanced,but matched into PGY-1

见是不是需要把两个track同时都rank.
不过，原则上，你不用问也应该都rank上，反正对你没害处。

。最后能不能去成想去的PG,或者卖不卖的掉，还是取决于rank list上排名在你前面的

今年申请了病理和神内，只有一个神内面试，病理多一点点
目前不好决定的是神内，一方面是local项目，对家庭当然非常非常有利
否则家里其他大人、小孩要伤筋动骨
另一方面prelim目前没解决，面试时问了PD，明确说他们不帮人SOAP PGY-1
其他病理项目都不需要这问题
不知道partially match了后，赌SOAP PGY-1难度有多大？
这个因素决定这个advance项目rank第一还是最后

发帖数: 558 | 41 借着下大雪不需要上班的福利，简单总结一下我的体会。作为住院总，参加每周
faculty meeting, 也参与讨论最近刚刚开始的ranking。随便说说一些看到的和听到的
，供大家面试借鉴。
1. 有一个candidate, 在整个面试过程中,身体似乎僵硬，面无笑容，被一个
interviewer 直接否掉了；原因是 作为医生，首先的懂交流。
2. 要认真对待每个面试官，他们每个人给你的打分 加起来的 总分 高了，才能在第一
轮rank中居高。
3. 如果有gap,一定要准备一个合情合理的解释，否则就被认为是red flag.
4. 语言，发音：其实面试的问题还是相对局限的，找个tutor纠正发音，反复练习；至
少在面试中，让别人觉得你的英语并不差。
5. 面试中，要会讲故事；重点就是 你是 如何在 朝你的目标努力的，比如做见习，实
习，研究等等。
6. 面试之前，最好还是要了解你所要去的医院；有针对性的 告诉面试者 这个医院就
是你将来想去的地方。有个candidate,使劲讲，做完住院医，他要去如何如何去著名的
大学去做fellow,也基本上被否掉了。
7. 很强的推荐信也加分

by saying **F=-F, I assume you are working in a minkowski space with dimension
4, for which a self dual tensor does not exist for the reason you have just
said. a self/anti dual tensor will only exists if the rank of the tensor is
some odd number and the dimension is 2*rank (for lorentzian signature). for
example, we can have a self dual 3-form in dimension 6. |

for a sample X1,...,Xn, if X1 is the rth smallest value, then the rank of X1
is r. if ties exist, then there are some different methods to handle it.
