even effort, no question about it. On uphills, shorten strides, throw your
arms down. Don't worry if someone
passes you on the uphills. You'll pass them on the downhills.:) On downhills

the midfoot. On steep downhills, I've seen very fast runners (5-ish pace)

Running uphills and downhills have different effects on cardiovascular
system and musculoskeletal system. That makes "even effort" easier said than
done, but definitely the way to go.
Running uphill is hard on both the heart and muscles, especially the
backside of your muscles (hamstrings, glutes, calves and achilles).
Running downhill is easier on the heart, but it's also easy to run too fast,
and have quads, knees and ankles beat up. The gravity puts a lot of stress
on your muscles.

On the more technical aspects of hill running - perhaps you already know
this: generally it's good to maintain even effort on the uphills and
downhills. however I think it's okay to let your heart rate go a little
higher on the uphills. On the downhills, maintain a high cadence so that it
won't wear out your leg muscles too much -- this is especially important in
the marathon, as the impact on leg muscles will take its toll after 20 miles.

Oil and Gas Companies Injected Cancer-Causing Chemicals During Fracking;
Backlash Grows
Drilling companies still claim that fracking, which involves shooting
chemicals and water underground to release gas, is safe but they are
increasingly fighting an uphill battle against facts.
The AP reported today that a new report by House Dems Henry Waxman of
California, Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Diana DeGette of Colorado
found that oil and gas companies injected millions of gallons of potentially...

A gunman shot dead three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse
on Monday, days after killing three soldiers nearby, prompting French
President Nicolas Sarkozy to put the region on its highest terrorism alert.
With the attacker, who escaped on a motorbike, still on the loose, police
stepped up a manhunt in the city of a million people in southwestern France.
Sarkozy said the killings and those of the soldiers, one of Caribbean and
two of Muslim origin, in two attacks last week, appe...

One of the most unique and uniquely odd film I have seen.
Considering when and where it was made, the production values are almost
unbelievably high. It seems to have been made in occupied France, with the
clear intent to blame the Freemasons as dupes and/or masterminds in
engineering the outbreak of war.
While proving the premise seems like it would be an uphill battle, the film
demonstrates great care in citing historical events within France to back
this up. Citing Freemason infiltrati...

Indian Railways finally moving on its dream project — high-speed trains
After policy flip-flops over decades, here is a concrete sign of India
getting its first bullet train. The Indian Railways quietly formed a company
called HSRC Ltd in July last to run its dream project, high-speed rail.
And if the buzz in Rail Bhawan is anything to go by, minister Pawan Kumar
Bansal has more to announce on the subject when he reads his first Rail
Budget next month. Even before Indian policymakers made any fo...

(CNN) -- A Colorado school's ruling over a transgender child has sparked
questions that could affect schools all over the country.
Which bathroom should be used by a child who identifies as a different
gender from his or her body? Where's the line between accommodation and
discrimination? At what point is a child old enough for that to even be an
issue?

The $6.50 Trade War
What Apple's iPhone tells us about U.S. trade with China.
No sooner has a new Congress arrived in Washington than the anti-China-trade
rhetoric has started anew. Senator Charles Schumer, whose Democrats still
control his chamber, has said he plans to re-introduce legislation to punish
China for its "currency manipulation." Tim Murphy, a Pennsylvania
Republican, may push similar legislation he co-sponsored in the ...

After defeat in California, New Mexico takes on Monsanto and GMO producers
A lawmaker in New Mexico wants to make it mandatory for genetically modified
foods to be properly labeled in supermarkets across the state. Given the
last attempt, though, it’s likely to be an uphill battle.
State Senator Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe) has proposed an amendment that won’t
be brought into debate until next year, but he hopes it will be approved so
shoppers can be sure o...

What Confucius Teaches Us About Modern American Justice
Massachusetts prosecutors will try Philip Chism, a 14-year-old accused of
murder, as an adult. Ancient Chinese philosophy explains why this is a bad
idea.
Confucius would not approve of trying minors as adults for crimes like
murder. (Wikimedia Commons)

Japan has a demographic problem, which has become an economic problem.
The population is gradually getting older, people are having fewer children,
and the ratio between prime age workers and retirees is shrinking. That
means less consumption, more fixed incomes, and a greater need for
government benefits. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has a steep uphill battle
ahead of him when it comes to trying to grow GDP.
