Dear Volvo Owner,
Not Mercedes-Benz, not BMW, not Audi and not Lexus could come near the
superior level of occupant protection for which Volvo was recognized in the
latest Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) testing.
We are pleased, though not surprised by last week’s IIHS announcement that
the Volvo S60 earned its highest rating in the Small Overlap crash test. It
is an achievement unmatched by any of Volvo’s European luxury competitors.
We are pleased because Volvo appreciates your business and the IIHS
recognition affirms the faith you placed in us by purchasing your Volvo.
We are not surprised because for decades, Volvo has studied accidents to
develop a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics and consequences of
all types of collisions. Volvo safety design starts when a new Volvo model
is but a blank sheet of paper. Volvo does not design its vehicles to pass
safety tests. Volvo safety design is an ever evolving comprehensive system
that embodies all that Volvo has learned in almost a century of commitment
to occupant safety.
While all luxury manufacturers promote their products with bold safety
claims, in this latest IIHS safety test, many brands such as Mercedes-Benz,
Lexus and Audi received a Poor rating. BMW did slightly better with a
Marginal rating. In the case of the Poor rated Lexus IS250/350, the Lexus
had up to 10 times as much occupant compartment intrusion as the Volvo.
Like people, automobiles possess character. And experience has shown that
the true character of an automobile, like that of a person, comes to the
fore in time of crisis. The latest IIHS testing provides a powerful reminder
that, at least for Volvo, beauty is more than skin deep.
It is our hope that all manufacturers study and learn from the results of
IIHS’s latest test and incorporate life saving technologies comparable to
those that have earned Volvo this coveted IIHS rating.
