predictive, reading road, engine, transmission, weather, windshield wiper
use, internal and external temperature, yaw sensors, steering and other
conditions more than 200 times per second to determine torque transfer.
In all, i-ACTIV AWD uses 27 different sensors that feed to a central control
module to determine how wheels need to be driven before the ever reach a
patch of ice or deep puddle.

A comparison between a couple of competing vehicles. Included are the
Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester, which join a CX-5 on a snow-covered slalom
course followed by a long, sweeping right turn. All vehicles are equipped
with Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 winter tires, and the target speed through
the course is 38 km/h. Stability control systems are on for this test, which
reveals each vehicle"s AWD characteristics with some surprising results.
The first vehicle I drive is the Forester. I had high hopes for the
Subaru going in, for there is currently a high-mileage Impreza in my
household of which I am quite fond. The Forester disappoints, however,
exhibiting a lot of understeer, mostly evident as it transitions through the
slalom, pushing well past the apex cones and lacking steering precision.
The Subaru’s stability control is more active under acceleration; not so
much when lifting the throttle and steering. It consistently runs wide
through the sweeping right-hander, too, something that could be detrimental
on a snowy road, where an inattentive motorist might run wide into a snow
bank or oncoming lanes. It is the only car that causes me to leave the
course and flatten some traffic cones.
The CR-V fares much better, its stability control system braking the
inside wheels when sensing a loss of traction during a turn, thus helping
slow and steer the car. The drawback of the Honda’s stability control is
that it is abrupt and it slows the car considerably, causing it to lose
momentum, and then scrambles to find traction again as it accelerates back
up to speed. The system works well; it"s just that it feels jerky and
unrefined.
The CX-5 impresses, as it is the only car that pivots when is senses a
loss of traction. When it begins to understeer, it manages braking and front
-to-rear torque distribution to induce a slight oversteer condition,
swinging the rear end out noticeably and turning the car in the desired
direction — and it does this consistently. I keep a steady throttle and
speed throughout the course with all of the vehicles, yet the CX-5 is the
only one that exhibits this behaviour. The result is confidence-inspiring
feedback and an uncanny ability to go where pointed.
The results are similar on the hill start. The Forester is first, and
with the steering turned to the right it just spins the front wheels, unable
to get going. Another attempt with the wheels straightened causes one rear
and one front wheel to spin, again with no forward momentum. The Forester
has to be backed down the hill for a second attempt, which is successful,
albeit laborious. The CR-V manages much better, stalling only momentarily
with the wheels turned to the right before rolling away over the hill.
The CX-5 leaves from a stop as if it were on level ground. A more
thorough test including even more competing vehicles might have altered my
assessment, but under these conditions and among these rivals, a Mazda with
i-ACTIV AWD is the best equipped for the worst our Canadian winters can
muster. |

最大的亮点是轮胎。:) 版上有个别脑子不灵光的人,总以为AWD比FWD安全。其实AWD的
优势在于通过性,不是安全性。雪地下坡需要刹车的时候,同车型的AWD版反而更不容
易刹住。

To demonstrate this difference, Mazda provided an AWD CX-3 with standard
Yokohama all-season tires and one with factory recommended Bridgestone
Blizzak winter tires. Around a snow-covered track, the winter tire advantage
was stark. The car equipped with winter tires exhibited much less
understeer around corners, much better acceleration from a stop, and a much,
much shorter stopping distance.
To really drive the point home, Mazda also provided a front-wheel-drive CX-3
on the all-season tires. It struggled mightily to accelerate from a stop,
understeered constantly, and had a significantly greater stopping distance
than the AWD CX-3 with winter tires. The AWD CX-3 with all-season tires
actually had the longest stopping distance due to the extra weight of the
AWD system compounded with the lack of grip from the all-season tires.

这个测试(还有很多大网站的测试),证明了这样一个结论:四驱虽然能提高雪地行车
性能,却基本不能提高雪地行车的安全性。在过弯和刹车的时候,四驱并不比两驱更安
全,甚至在刹车距离上还稍差一点点。
鼓吹四驱可以提高安全性,甚至还可以防黑冰...这不光是弱智,简直是在害人。

最大的亮点是轮胎。:) 版上有个别脑子不灵光的人,总以为AWD比FWD安全。其实AWD的
优势在于通过性,不是安全性。雪地下坡需要刹车的时候,同车型的AWD版反而更不容
易刹住。
Tires, Tires, Tires
To demonstrate this difference, Mazda provided an AWD CX-3 with standard
Yokohama all-season tires and one with factory recommended Bridgestone
Blizzak winter tires. Around a snow-covered track, the winter tire advantage
was stark. The car equipped with winter tires exhibited much less
understeer around corners, much better acceleration from a stop, and a much,
much shorter stopping distance.
To really drive the point home, Mazda also provided a front-wheel-drive CX-3
on the all-season tires. It struggled mightily to accelerate from a stop,
understeered constantly, and had a significantly greater stopping distance
than the AWD CX-3 with winter tires. The AWD CX-3 with all-season tires
actually had the longest stopping distance due to the extra weight of the
AWD system compounded with the lack of grip from the all-season tires.

这个测试(还有很多大网站的测试),证明了这样一个结论:四驱虽然能提高雪地行车
性能,却基本不能提高雪地行车的安全性。在过弯和刹车的时候,四驱并不比两驱更安
全,甚至在刹车距离上还稍差一点点。
鼓吹四驱可以提高安全性,甚至还可以防黑冰...这不光是弱智,简直是在害人。
