Christoph Eschenbach, Conductor
André Watts, Piano
Richard Wagner once asked, “Do you know a musician who is more musical than
Liszt?” For this program, former Ravinia music director Christoph
Eschenbach joins keyboard legend André Watts in an exploration of the
overwhelming combination of dazzling technique and ravishing artistry
epitomized by the second piano concerto of the 19th century’s most
legendary pianist. Its extreme demands of technique and passion are exceeded
by the most notorious work of the 20th century, the riot-inducing “Rite of
Spring.” The layered and dizzyingly complex rhythms of this brilliant
orchestral showpiece, once deemed virtually unplayable, are child’s play in
the hands of the world’s most virtuosic orchestra, the Chicago Symphony.
Berlioz’s dazzling overture opens the program. |
