S***r 发帖数: 43 | 6 I am new in Chicago as well. Here is my 2 cents.
Since your husband will work at downtown Chicago, he is most likely to take the
metro train to work instead of driving a car unless he wants to pay the
$280+ monthly parking fee.
That said, I would suggest you to hire a licensed realtor who has access to
MLS to help you find a rental near one of the metro stations.
The ideal location should have the following features:
free indoor parking
free heating and air conditioning
free gas
free gym
free internet (4 Mbps)
free basic cable TV
convenient access to Jewel Osco or other grocery stores
2-3 min walking distance to a metro station
I moved in this month with the help of a realtor agent, who nailed a deal
for me. It's a 950 sq. ft condo with all of the above features for a month-
by-month rental fee of $1650. I can walk out with one month notice.
The place is in South Loop, built in 2007, next to the Roosevelt metro station.
So far I like this place. Very safe. I hit the gym every single day. Looks
like I would stay here until the summer time.
The bottom line is that you need a professional to help you and you do not
need to pay a penny. The landlord would! |

S***r 发帖数: 43 | 8 As to calculating the time needed from your new place to work, Google map
would be very helpful, including picking the public transit route for you. A
monthly pass for the metro system (train and bus) is $86, available at most
Jewel Osco.
You can also buy a Chicago card instead, which is like a plastic monthly
pass thing. Check online for more info about Chicago card. |
S***r 发帖数: 43 | 9 Hire a professional (for free) who would understand your needs. That's the point

S***r 发帖数: 43 | 10 The DIY way is to search Craigslist and contact each property yourself. It's
time consuming in my opinion.
I visited Chicago for one and half days last December. One day for interview
and half a day for apartment hunting. In a 3 hour window, my agent showed
me 8 properties circling around the downtown area. The prices range from
$2,700 to $1,400. I picked one lake-front property for about $2,000, but that
one was rented out before I could send in my application.
Still my agent kept searching for the type of properties I liked (free
parking and free gym, close to metro station) and found this one for me. We
did all the discussion through emails and phone calls. I got the deal done
within 10 days of my Chicago visit.
Now my next goal is to find a place to play indoor basketball. Unfortunately, my agent could not help me on that! |
