Couple random thoughts to share (sent from iPad, sorry for the brevity)
for research uinv:
Publiication is the key, but publishing in good or top journals, quality
is more important than quantity.
Funding, nationally competitive grants is important, being PIs. get a
letter of support from 牛人 if poosibe.
Ok or above average teaching.
Get along with colleagues, good to have some close senior colleagues,
Primarily through research collaboration.
Open minded, willing to share.
Start to get to know potential letter writers earlier, it takes time to
build the relationship.
Just my two cents. Hope it help for junior faculty.

| x***u 发帖数: 11 | 4 Different schools have different policy. Some allow certain number of
collaborators, some donot allow any collaborators. Check with the school
policy first.
Multiple ways to get to know people yet not being collaborators;
Invite people come to your school's seminar;
Give talks in conference, talk to potential letter writers, being a session
chair;
Follow up people you know in conferences;
Go to give talks in other schools, normally junior faculty wont be famous
enough to be invited, but if you have travel plan to certain place, just ask
the nearby schools that we can give a talk if they like;
Google it, plenty other suggestion.
This is important, but do not need to overdo this. your tenure dossiers I.e
publication, grant, teaching, speak for yourself. Always try to balance your
strength and weakness. For example, If you do not have strong publication,
focus on publishing first.

知道你在做什么。有最新的文章发表的话,可以发给他们。
会议上见不到的,可以想办法应用他们的东西,然后主动
把文章发过去,套近乎。
在第五年的时候,去那些可以和他们碰上的会议,等他们
问你怎么样的时候,就说很忙,要准备上tenure了。学术
圈子的人愿意帮忙的可能会主动提出做你的letter writers,
如果他们不主动提,你可以想他们求教谁作为letter writters
合适。
如果遇到一个很好的、有名望的letter writer,最好不要
和此人成为合作者。否则,很可能被学校排除在外。
一般情况下,最后选定2n个人,n是学校要求你提交的人数。

很多系有请人来讲座的传统,可以提名letter writters,
或者作为host来接待潜在的letter writters。
