makes sense, you will be okay. If you are applying for R01 and you ask more
than 3 calendar months as a PI without justification, you will be in
trouble. Also, you should not use the modular budget. You should look at
what you need and do the detail budget for the grant each year. If you take
the easy way using the modular budget, you will be a poor PI... | f***k

sit in the study section, we always talk about issues with modular or non-
modular budgets. Although it "should not" affect the score because it was
discussed after we put in the final scores in the computer, senior PIs
always pick on those PIs, especially new PIs, who request non-modular
budgets, and that may very likely affect their initial scores, which drives
the final score range. So, if you are a new PI trying to get your first R01,
always use modular budget. You can request a non-modular one when you are
more senior or try to get it renewed. My 2 scents.

发帖数: 2041 | 5 Well, each study section is different. However, it is against NIH rule to
score based on the budget as you mentioned (my officer always emphasize this
). Also, all the R01s these days require multiple labs, I dear anyone to
put modular budget for such grant. I don't know if you are in NCI related
study sections, but my study section only has less than 10 modular budget
grants out of about 90. If you are in NIGMS, I can understand that a
modular budget will probably do.
Also, a lot of reviewers don't read the rule for different funding
mechanisms. For example, it is clearly stated that NIH SBIR/STTR has NO
HARD BUDGET CAP in the instruction. Some reviewers will keep saying the
grant is over the HARD CAP when all expenses are justified.

Although it states that the budget should not be a factor to affect the
scores, but in reality it does most of times. Modular budget or a little
over modular in general <350k may be ok, but should be properly justified. I
had seen a new PI proposing 499K, it does not make any sense at all. I had
also seen a couple times that some new PIs even budget a senior PI as "
mentor"
which is ridiculous. These things will definitely affect the reviewer's
attitude for the grant.
Be careful when you propose large budget, for instance, a supply budget over
$100K is typically a warning sign, unless you can detail all the
experimental cost. $15K to $25K/FTE/year is more typical. For experiment
with animals, if you propose to use a few thousand animals, you will need to
justify very carefully and as detail as possible. |
