Desire has two children: power and weakness. Because of her desire, Wenyan
had been powerful, despite the fact that she was beaten up by a gangster.
She can make me do anything. When I saw her walking toward me, I knew that
she wanted something from me. Under my arm, there was a book. I had planned
to spend my Friday night reading this book. I asked Wenyan nervously: “What
do you want?” She said: you are going to dress up for a dance party. Put
your novel aside.” Am I supposed to be surprised? Party again. I knew it no
use to say no to Wenyan, but I still tried:” Me? I don’t know about
dancing.” Just as what I had expected, she never accepts no as answers:”
You don’t have to dance. Tonight, I need your expertise. I need you to help
me to check out a boy. Among us, you are the only one who had some dating
experience.” I blushed. I knew what she meant was that moon light event. I
said angrily:”Shut up. Never mention that again. Otherwise, I will get mad.
” Wenyan giggled and held my arm to walk toward my dorm.
After an hour, Wenyan, Huaqing and I arrived at a dance party. As soon as we
stood still, there was a boy approached us and invited me to dance. Me? not
a chance. I shook my head and declined that invitation. That boy looked
confused. In college, dancing parties were often considered a chance for
boys and girls to get acquainted. Boys assume that girls who attending
parties were waiting for boys to invite them to dance. But I knew them
inside out. I was in the party for Wenyan. To prevent others from inviting
me, I hide behind Huaqing and asked Wenyan impatiently: Where is the boy? Be
quick. I don’t feel comfortable here. Wenyan pointed at the band of the
party. There was at least five boys in that band. Huaqing asked: “Which one
?” Wenyan said: “The guitar player”. I focused my attention on the guitar
player. The dance room was really dark. The band situated themselves in a
dark corner. They were entirely devoted to their music. They didn’t realize
that we looked at them so attentively. From a far distance, the guitar
player looked like a handsome boy with a sunny smile. Huaqing immediately
said:”You got my bless.” I guess, if possible, she would arrange an
engagement party. To be sounded more convincing, she added:” You are a
nature match to each other. He is handsome. You are handsome yourself. I am
happy for you.” Honestly speaking, I would be happy for Wenyan if this is
the boy who she had a crash on. But this is so not like Wenyan. I cannot
help but asking:” He surely looks nice. But among your followers, he
certainly is not the most handsome one. Why him?” Wenyan said reluctantly:
”He can get me A in at least three courses. In addition to that, he can
help me get a certificate in hydrology.”
After hearing this answer, Huaqing and I nearly collapsed. With the faintest
hope that I could have heard it wrongly, I asked:” I don’t follow.”
Wenyan gave us more details:”That boy called Shilei feng. I found out that
he is a Ph.D. student of professor Chang. Professor Chang always asks his
student to teach courses for him. I learned that boy will teach three
courses for Professor Chang. Professor Chang is also in charge of the
certificate in hydrology. He is too busy to take care of that certificate.
The student is the one who is really in charge of the certificate.”Huaqing
asked:”So you plan to date him just for passing three courses?” A very
proud smile appeared on Wenyan’s face: “Not just pass the courses. I aim
at As.”
Huaqing and I looked at each other and we both had a lot of question marks
above our heads. Huaqing tried to save Wenyan, so she said:”Wenyan, it is
not a good idea. We need to find someone to marry. What if you find out
later that he is not someone worth marrying?” Wenyan said:”Who said I want
to marry him? When it is the time for me to move on, I will.”
Huaqing was in shock and she couldn’t close her mouth. But she was
speechless. I had to ask Wenyan:”If you have decided to date him, why did
you ask us to check him out? “ Wenyan blushed and said:”I need him to fall
in love with me. So I need your expertise.” Our expertise? Isn’t she the
most attractive among us? I said:”You know, you are a handsome girl. If you
decide to date someone, they will date you. But they may stay away from you
after the first date. You are too intimidating.” Apparently Wenyan knew
her weakness, so she asked:”That is why I need your advice.”
I decided to tease her:” I would suggest you to take him for movie. The
night when I was with Jingfeng, we watched a new movie: Mom, please love me
once more. It was a sad story. A woman, who was not accepted by her in laws
because of her inferior birth, gave birth to a boy. After her husband died
in a car accident, she raised her son by herself. But the family of her
husband won the custody when her son was five. The story was about how her
son found her after 25 years. It supposed to be sad story. The entire
theater was full of sobbing sound. If you manage to collect some moisture in
your eyes, I bet that will generate some affection in Shilei’s heart. The
weakness of boys is their desire to protect girls. It always makes them feel
good about themselves. So make sure you look like someone who needs
protections.”“Did you cry? “
“No. I didn’t. “
Huaqing recovered from her shock:”Then Wenyan will not cry as well. Her
heart is as hard as a stone. “I said:”I agree. So Wenyan, you better put
some pepper oil on a tissue. When the movie is about to over, wipe your eyes
with the tissue. Just remember, you only need to cry for half an hour. The
affection generated by that amount of tear will last for about two years. It
certainly will wear out, since he will find out who you truly are.”Wenyan
realized that I might be teasing her, so she said:”Ok. I will take him for
that movie. If this plan doesn’t work, I will make you two cry.” Huaqing
and I burst into laugh.I never imagined that Wenyan would take my advice.
But she did invite Shilei for that movie. When inside the theater, she was a
little bit absentminded. She worried that the pepper oil on a tissue will
dirt her pocket. The movie gradually grabbed her attention. The son in the
movie got sick. The mother went to a temple to pray for her son to restore
health. She hit her head on the ground to show her sincerity until it was
bleeding. This scene suddenly brought Wenyan back to her childhood. When she
was four, one night, her mother found that she got a high fever. It was
snowing really hard. The nearest hospital was five miles away. Her mother
used a big blanket wrapped her. She held her and walked to the hospital.
Wenyan can remember clearly that her mother called her name every minute
just to make sure that she was breathing. Her nose started to sour. Her eyes
were watering.After the movie, she still cannot hold back her tears. She
just cried and cried. Shilei tried to say something nice: “It was just a
movie. It is Ok. Don’t cry.”But no matter what Shilei said, Wenyan kept
crying. She cried for about two hours. Shilei was clueless, and finally he
started to make faces. Wenyan then started to laugh in tears.Unless you
learned math differently from me, it looks that Shilei’s affection for
Wenyan will be good for at least 8 years (how did I figure it out? Half an
hour’s tear will be good for 2 years. So two hours’ tear should be good
for 8 years). Ouch…..This might be too much. Let’s cross our fingers and
hope the decay rate of Shilei’s affection toward Wenyan is higher than what
