After that movie night, Wenyan and Shilei were glued together. When the
summer break was approaching, Wenyan had forgotten about her tears and
decided that she would not go home for the break. She planned to stay school
to get a certificate in English. Before we returned home, we three gather
for dinner and Shilei joined us. During the dinner, Huaqing asked Shilei to
take good care of Wenyan. But Shilei said he had a plan for the summer:”We
have a summer program to help the society. I actually hope that you three
can join us.”
“What kind of summer program? “
“You know, our country is going through an economic transformation. Do you
know who are affected most by this?”Wenyan always had a lot of complaints.
Her answers were not surprising:”It is certainly us. The government used to
arrange jobs for college graduates. Now, we have to find jobs on our own.
Students who have backgrounds, like Qingna, will find jobs easily. Students
like me will have to work our butt off to find a job. You know what? In
order to enter the job market of Beijing, people have to have a certificate
in English. Some company only recruits people who are certified in computer.
I need to get at least three certificates in order to have a chance in the
current job market.”Shilei said:”You are right. We are affected. But we
are not the people who are affected most. The senior people in rural areas
are affected most.”
I was intrigued by his answer:”How? This economic transformation mostly
occurs in urban areas. The policy for the rural areas remained relatively
stable. Isn’t it?”Shilei replied:”The policy in rural areas has changed.
But that is not the reason why the senior were affected. The real reason was
the transformation in people’s mentality. The senior people still have the
traditional Chinese mentality. Based on the tradition, the children would
mind their parents, and they should take care of their parents. The parents
often spend every penny on their children, since they don’t need money when
they got old. But now, the mentality of some young people has changed. They
don’t mind their parents and don’t think they should take care of them.
The senior had spent every penny on their children and their grandchildren.
They are moneyless now. Some children often abuse their parents and curse
them to die. Some senior are suffering from starvation. They are living in
hell. You three came from a big city. This may sound alien to you. But I
visited several villages. I have seen many seniors living in hell. Our
program is sponsored by several companies. We brought some rice to these
poor people. We gave them a certificate to prove that they need the help
from the society.”
The word “certificate” triggered Wenyan:”Are you crazy? That certificate
will shame their children. That will make their lives more miserable.”
Shilei just smiled: “You are right. We don’t encourage these people to
hang their certificate on the wall. We wrote petition letters to the central
government. We want the government to do something. After all, it is them
who are unprepared for the transformation in people’s mentality. If the
government plan to do anything, the certified seniors at least can get some
support.”Wenyan was surprised and she was never afraid of speaking her mind
smiled again. His affection toward Wenyan just grew a little bit, since he
had never seen anybody as out spoken as Wenyan. OUCH...This gone hurt…I
wanted very much to join this program. I was drawn to rural areas and poor
people. I knew how it felt when you were helpless. I knew what it meant if
somebody extended their hands to you when you were desperate. But I cannot.
My brother planned to get married during summer. I needed very much to go
home. This dinner conversation however changed my view about Shilei. I had
thought he was just a simple minded boy who liked music. After the dinner, I
followed Wenyan to her dorm. I rarely did that, so she knew I had something
to say. Before I say anything, She warned me:”Don’t lecture me.”
“I don’t want to lecture you. I just want to let you know Shilei is a good
boy.”“That is lecturing. You know who I am.”“But you can change it. You
don’t have to be who you are.” “Change yourself first. See, I have out-
grown the tragedy happened in our childhood. You stayed in that shadow. At
least, I am dating someone. You are afraid of love ever since Jingfeng
offended you.”Hearing her comments, I froze there. Was she right about me?
Was I still in that shadow? I can hardly remember anything that had happened
during my childhood. But the emptiness in my chest can be felt all the time
and my chest felt like being on the edge to collapse. I always wanted to go
a faraway place where the air is so thin and the sky is so blue. I often
wondered if that was the reason why I liked to ride train. | G*******d
