Study: Toyota’s electronics not to blame in unintended acceleration, NHTSA
ill-equipped for evaluation
The seemingly never ending investigation into the possible causes of
unintended acceleration by Toyota vehicles has once again found no fault in
the Japanese automaker’s components, but instead raised new questions about
the capability of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when
it comes to making such determinations.
The latest study, a 162 page turner by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS
) National Research Council, titled “The Safety Promise and Challenges of
Automotive Electronics: Insights from Unintended Acceleration,” yet again
cleared Toyota of fault, but interestingly turned the spotlight back on the
very organization that commissioned the report: NHTSA.
The report says that no findings were ever substantiated that pointed to
electronics specifically being the root cause of unintended acceleration out
of the hundreds of cases investigated, but it did raise questions about
whether or not the safety organization was so equipped to properly
investigate these sorts of matters as the electronics in vehicles continue
to become more and more advanced.
Not surprisingly, Toyota thanked NAS for its work, but now it appears NHTSA
is the one that needs to begin its work – starting with lobbying Congress
for additional funding to better train and equip its staff to evaluate the
advanced computers of modern vehicles.
