Breathe, USC fans, breathe.
In fact, I'd suggest you ignore what happened Tuesday with Ohio State and
its slap on the wrist from the NCAA for a massive systemic breakdown and a
coverup by head coach, Jim Tressel.
Yes, when you hold up the Ohio State case and the USC case, it's impossible
not to conclude the Ohio State case was far more severe. It was, of course,
without question. No informed, objective person believes differently.
But here's the thing: Being outraged will accomplish nothing. You will be
unhappy and your team will still be docked 30 scholarships over the next
three years for what one player secretly did while Ohio State will be down
just nine scholarships over the same time period for the rule-breaking of
five with full knowledge of their head coach. And your unhappiness will
provide great joy to folks who don't like your team.
Adopting a placid pose — at least as best as you can — will be good
practice for handling potentially more infuriation ahead. The NCAA also
likely will give even worst upcoming cases — North Carolina and the
University of Miami at Paul Dee — less severe penalties than it gave USC.
Why? Because the NCAA treated USC unfairly — everybody in college sports
knows this — and it likely won't revisit such irrational harshness. In the
end, the justification for such severe penalties, meted out in contrast to
past precedent, was little more than "just because."
But the NCAA, an organization not endowed with a sense of self-awareness,
failed to foresee when it curb-stomped USC that among the lawbreakers in
college football, the Trojans were jaywalkers amid a mob of bank robbers.
Ohio State's sanctions, in fact, represent a return to NCAA normalcy: Mostly
toothless penalties that will have little effect on the program's prospects
, other than a single-season bowl ban.
There we go again: Fretting the particulars and the injustice of it all.
The point is USC fans have been quite reasonably been shaking their fists at
the heavens or, more accurately, the NCAA home office in Indianapolis for
two years. That anger has accomplished nothing, other than emboldening
taunts from opposing fans.
You know: Fans whose teams didn't finish 10-2 and ranked No. 5 in the nation.
And therein lies the ultimate revenge: Winning.
It's hard to imagine the next five years won't see a USC downturn. Losing 30
scholarships is a tough burden. Things could be particularly difficult in
2014 and 2015, when the true cumulative impact arrives. And it could be even
more galling if Ohio State is back in the national title hunt those years.
Maybe playing Miami in a Fiesta Bowl rematch!
But if the Trojans can somehow remain in the picture, perhaps playing in a
Rose Bowl -- or two -- along the way that would be a heck of a panacea,
wouldn't it?
It's a longshot, sure. But other than that, we've got nothing for you USC.
Sorry.
Easy, now. Breathe, breathe. Happy place. Happy place.
Oh, no. That's exactly what we were trying to avoid. |

USC was that Reggie Bush's purchase of a 1996 Chevy sedan in 2005 did not
raise any alarms among USC coaches and athletic department officials.

z*****a 发帖数: 3809 | 19 The punishments levied against the schools is supposed to punish what the
schools did wrong, not what the actual players did wrong.
OSU knew about its boosters giving players illegal benefits and actively
tried to cover it up.
There is zero evidence that USC knew anything about Reggie Bush being paid
by NFL agents (who had no affiliation with USC). The best the NCAA could
come up with is that somehow USC should have known because Reggie Bush
bought a crappy 9-year old used car. Also, the fact that the agents were
actually paying Bush to get him to LEAVE USC early makes it pretty clear
that USC wasn't involved.
BTW, I'm not saying OSU's punishment is too light. I'm saying USC's
punishment is way excessive.

NCAA Places USC on Probation for Violations
09/10/01
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has placed USC on two years’
probation for violations in the Student Athlete Academic Services (SAAS)
program. The violations were uncovered by USC in 1996-98 and reported by the
university to PAC-10 and the NCAA.
The incidents led to major changes in the governance of the program, which
is required by the NCAA to assure that student athletes have the opportunity
to take full advantage of the university’s academic programs.
The NCAA cleared USC’s basketball program of allegations of recruiting
violations, but reduced football scholarships in 2002-2003 from 85 to 83,
and took away one-half scholarship from the women’s swimming and diving
program.
Executive Vice Provost Mike Diamond responded in a statement:
"This case involves three separate and unrelated incidents of improper
assistance to student-athletes in the Student Athlete Academic Services (
SAAS) program, which occurred over a two-year period from summer 1996 to
spring 1998. We self-reported these incidents to the PAC-10 and the NCAA
after conducting an extensive review of SAAS. [The] announcement by the NCAA
of limited probation and limited reductions in scholarships brings closure
to this unfortunate episode.
"Although the three instances uncovered by USC reflect a tiny fraction of
the academic assignments completed by USC student-athletes over the period
covered by this review, even a single instance of improper assistance for a
student-athlete is too many. We do not tolerate cheating at USC, and this
case should signal our seriousness and our determination to root out those
who do. The individuals implicated are no longer employed by USC.
"For the past year-and-a-half, the provost’s office and the director of
athletics have shared responsibility for oversight of the SAAS program. The
SAAS staff is responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the NCAA to
provide academic support to student-athletes. SAAS has been completely
reorganized, the staff has been significantly expanded and the training
responsibility for tutors has been transferred to the USC Learning Center.
The entire program is monitored regularly, and randomly spot-checked."

w*****2 发帖数: 1458 | 25 NCAA Hands USC Severe Penalties; Entire Athletics Program on Probation for
Four Years
By Leader Staff. Published on 06/10/2010 - 3:24pm
Following the culmination of a four-year investigation of USC athletics, the
NCAA served the school a string of penalties on Thursday. Notably, this
will keep the Trojans football team out of bowl games for the next two
seasons. It could also cost the school millions of dollars.
The sanctions are just for the football team, however. The men's basketball
and women's tennis teams are also affected.
The NCAA first began investigating the school four years ago after receiving
two seperate reports that tailback Reggie Bush and basketball forward O.J.
Mayo had accepted improper gifts from outside sports marketers and agents.
On Thursday, the NCAA's Committee on Infractions cited USC for a lack of
institutional control, extra benefits and unethical conduct by an assistant
football coach, amongst a list of other things.
In addition to being banned from participating in post-season bowl games,
the football team will also lose 10 scholarships per season for three
seasons. They will also face restrictions on how and when their coaches can
recruit high school prospects. Furthermore, they will forfeit victories from
part of 2004 and all of 2005, which could put their 2004 national
championship in jeopardy.
USC was a bit more proactive in dealing with the basketball team, and
earlier this year agreed to a one-year postseason ban and restrictions on
scholarships and recruiting. Thus, the NCAA decided not to take any further
action.
The entire athletic program at USC has been placed on four years of
probation. The committee also said that they had seriously considered a
television ban.
Bush and May both have said that they did nothing wrong. USC administrators
can now appeal the decision.
