Thanks. It was an interesting show, didn't know there are so much
controversies in distance running, i.e. form, diet, barefoot running.

A really weird thing about the marathon is that today's marathoners (elites)
are not much faster (nor better) than back in 1980. While it's true that
Kenyans and Ethiopians now routinely run 2:05, they are done on flat courses
, not Boston or NYC. When Alberto Salazar set the then world record of 2:08,
it was on the NYC course. His time would still win NYC marathon today. Bill
Rodgers carb loaded on junk food and ran 2:09 in Boston. He wrote GBTC (
greater boston track club) by hand on his race T-shirt. Those guys didn't
have a team of doctors working for them, nor trained at altitude, or any
fancy like that. As they say, all the money in the world cannot buy a faster
marathon time.

Christopher McDougull writes in "Born to run", expensive running shoes
increases the odds of injury. I wonder if similar things happen in other
aspect of distance running, like other gears, and training.
