1. 3.5 minutes improvement in the marathon would be enormous. That's a 3%
improvement. How much is 3%? Imagine a sprinter breaking 9.3 for the 100m,
or a middle distance runner breaking 3:20 for the 1500m. Not gonna happen.
2. There has been essentially no improvement in distance running
performances on the track over the last decade. Top 2 performances in the 5K
were dated 2004 and 1998. Top 2 performances in the 10K were dated 2005 and
1998. Top 4 performances in 1500m were all before 2001. Nobody can touch
those records today. Why? Likely have to do with the widespread use of EPO
in that era.
3. Are runners really getting faster in the marathon? US and Japanese
marathoners have not seen any significant improvement in their times since
the 1980s - if you compare the top 5 or top 10 marathoners in the era. The
improvement of men's marathon records in recent years largely have to do
with more eastern African being attracted to the marathon at a young age due
to the increased prize money. It's the same talent pool.
It would take a LONG LONG time before 2:02 is broken.

不见得。
我还是很希望ryan hall把他理想实现的。。加上义肢技术也越来越牛了,说不定那天
给个刀锋战士搞定了。人类总是在一次次地打破前辈认为的不可能。

Even a fully healthy and in shape Ryan Hall would be outside the top 20 in
the world today. In reality Ryan Hall won't even be able to beat Japanese
amateur runner Yuki Kawauchi. In fact, it is questionable whether Ryan Hall
will ever be able to break 2:10 again. If Hall really thought he could reach
2 hours, he'd be even more of a nutcase than I thought he was.

老大,为什么日本鬼子跑那么快?都赶上非洲的了?他们和中国人体质有什么不同吗?
为什么中国人不行呢?长跑也不是什么高技术含量的东西……不明白

An interesting discussion on Toshihiko Seko, one of the greatest marathoners
the world has ever seen:
"Seko did some training in NZ in the early 80s. His normal training volume,
from discussions with some Japanese runners and coaches, was around 250kms
per week. He was said to oftne get over 300kms per week during building
phases of training.
The Soh twins, his main rivals in Japan at the time, were also training in
NZ in the 80s.
They once did a (about) 126 km run around Mt Egmont/Taranaki (March 1983).
They averaged 4mins per km for the run. This run can be verified by many
people including 1982 Fukuoka champ Paul Ballinger. Paul actually rode his
bikearound with them for much of the circuit."
"-For his debut marathon when he was a sophomore in univ. ('77) he peaked
out at 666 km in a month and individual runs as long as 40 km.
-When he set the national 10000m record ('80) he was up to 770 km a month
and 35 km long runs.
-When he set the national record in the marathon ('83) he did 1089 km a
month with 70 km long runs."
"In the book 'Running with the Legends' by Michael Sandrock there's a
chapter about Seko. Amog other things it talks about
- how he did run 1200km in 8 days (just under 90 miles a day) during a trip
to New Zealand
- back in Japan, most of his long runs were run on an asphalt loop of 1325
metres, that had each 100m marked out so his coach could monitor his pace at
all times. Some runs would consist of up to 70 laps of this loop!
- often trained so hard that he couldn't eat afterwards, instead drinking
about 10 beers"
