President Obama rebuffed reporters' attempts to ask about Afghanistan today,
focusing instead on what he described as his administration's biggest
challenge: Jobs.
"I will not rest until businesses are investing again and businesses are
hiring again and people have work again," Obama said after meeting with his
Cabinet.
Obama said the stimulus bill and other administration actions are helping
the economy grow out of the recession, and prevented it from sliding "into a
depression."
He added: "Now, this is going to be a challenging task."
Renewed growth in the economy has not translated to more jobs, he said, and
the unemployment rate is now above 10%. A week from Thursday, Obama will
host a jobs forum at the White House, and he asked Cabinet members to "
generate good ideas" about how to marry economic growth with job creation.
Obama said he and his Cabinet also discussed national security, the budget,
and "the urgent need for us to get to the finish line" on a health care bill
. The president also said he asked his aides to rest up a little bit over
