Ok... the first quote is accurate, the second is my taking artistic license
with what the CBO actually said... sue me:
President Barack Obama said on Thursday that “we got back every dime we
used to rescue the financial system."
According to the Congressional Budget Office, however, the government
will lose about $24 billion on the bailout.
“We got back every dime we used to rescue the financial system, but we
also passed a historic law to end taxpayer-funded Wall Street bailouts for
good,” Obama said in Miami Thursday.
The Congressional Budget Office--based on figures from Obama’s own
Office of Management and Budget---gives a different assessment.
“The cost to the federal government of the TARP’s transactions (also
referred to as the subsidy cost), including grants for mortgage programs
that have not yet been made, will amount to $24 billion,” said the CBO
report, which was released on the same day Obama spoke.
Will these sorts or reports make a difference to the electorate?
Who knows.
But make no mistake about it.
Mrs. Mo (as in momentum) is squarely, as of this writing, in the camp of
Mitt Romney.
It's hope and change to believe in.

I posted a couple weeks ago about the profit and loss in TARP.
basically the original program to stablize banking and AIG dispensed about
340B and so far got back 320B with returned principle plus interest,
dividend and appreciation in the assets purchased. Future returns are
expected. so it is very likely this part of the program as originally
designed by Hank Paulson under Bush with democratic support will break even.
the part that was allocated after Obama came into power to rescue the
automakers dished out about 80B and the government is still 40B in the red
so far with GM stock price down 30% since its IPO.
Also worth noting is that the program which granted Solyndra loan guarantee
is Energy Policy Act of 2005, passed under Bush and as I remember Republican
congress.
Solyndra could not get the loan during Bush era, Obama admin slammed through
within 2 months of inauguration. 500M down the drain. Today another 250M.
so it totaled 750M, not too shy from 1B.
