hardwood planks need engineering treatment before they can be used, like
compression, waxing, staining and blah. engineered wood is more like a
marketing item for those those composite wood - a little like townhouse |

发帖数: 381 | 15 我们也正打算把厨房的vinyl floor给换成laminate的，因为铺完客厅剩下几包刚好够
厨房面积。laminate 铺厨房不是很理想的材料，主要是防水问题，据铺了的人讲，要
比较小心维护，一有点水就马上搽干净，就还好吧，预算有限也不想折腾瓷砖了，所以
还是下决心铺了。如果你的subfloor有些地方踩上去嘎吱响，地板松了的地方四周一定
要先用螺丝钉固定好了，否则铺了floor以后那个踩的嘎吱声很烦心。
你到网上google下，有不少教材关于铺laminate floor的。

括怎么装,网上可以找到home depot和lowes的tutorials，还有county的code.这样
interview contractor的时候容易问出来好坏，开工之前很多问题可以达成一致，比如
地板走向是垂直于joists（牢固为主）还是跟房间长的那面墙或射进来的光线平行（美
观为主），沿墙四周要不要留点空隙供热胀冷缩(contractors说法不一，你要交待好）
，颜色太深或疤节的plank要不要放在closet里或房间四周(因为家具可以遮挡),
contractors不一定有这些common sense.
中国人contractor大部分不懂英文，不指望他们了解county code和best practices,
所以自己得懂。 |

材料:
1. Hard wood floor planks: 7 boxes，6.25 boxes actually used, 22 sqft per
box, $107 x 7 = $749
2. Stair nose pieces: $50 x 2 = $100
3. Floor nails: 1 box (1000 nails) $20
4. Finish nails: 1 box $7
5. Staples
6. Wood glue
7. Moulding: 2 16' base boards $12 + some left over from previous project
6. 垫子是用修白菜房剩下的防潮纸，忘记价钱了。
工具本来就有了，floor nailer 用完退掉。
耗时可能超过40小时。第一次做没经验，做得很慢，过分节省木料，而且没有将所有木
板按长短分组排序，花了太多时间在挑选木板，另外都在车库锯，来回走很费时。 |

木纹的，比如acasia, tiger wood, 个人以为
大花纹用的搭配得好就很好，不好就很悲剧啊。
还有一个趋势就是wide plank. 当然如果是天然
实木，越宽肯定越贵啊。 |

實物後滅草了，一個是壞的多，基本所有的plank都要手工切割去掉不好部份後才能用
，家裡的contractor也是我們挺好的朋友說不要用那個了，木頭因為沒有seal而且木頭
是那種特別軟的木頭，掉點東西一砸一個坑。剛弄完了看著不錯，長期用不耐用 |

the pillar, right? Also whether the pillar is weight bearing or not. I am
not an expert here. But if I were to do it, I'd rather not disturbing the
pillar and use baseboard/quarter round.

不过俺也同意，如果不是极北苦寒之地，两层的就够了，double hung的，光光的没有

separate barrier. Read the instruction first.
Install the floor is not that easy, unless you have a very flat sub-floor.
Also you need to consider what to do around corners and under door jams, how
to do transitions etc.
All I am trying to do here is to make you think about these first instead of
finding them the hard way after you have ripped your current flooring.
