在华盛顿州爬了几年的山，多次经过Mt Baker，不过从来没有近距离和他接触，这个周
六，趁着难得的好天气，准备到一條從貝克山南侧直上登頂者過夜的High Camp的trail
，Railroad Grade走走看，这条trail的review非常吸引人。要到Railroad Grade
trail，要沿五號公路北上，转20號公路。來到里路标82英里处，转到Baker Lake Rd北
行12英里（turnoff is 0.2 mile after you enter the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie
National Forest），再左转NF12號走3.6英里的石子路（signed "Mt Baker National
Recreation Area")，最後右转進入NF13號走到底，将近5英里，就到达海拔3300英尺的
登山口。虽然NF12和NF13都是石子路，不过路面状况非常好。来到停车场，因为这里有

至少前两个都是vanderbilt家族修建的
the breakers是大宅里面最恢弘奢华的
地面，墙壁，天花板都是大理石，玉石，丝绸，金，白金还有油画；随处都是艺术品
真的很震撼。
听着耳机里断断续续的讲解，让我更加对vanderbilt家族的兴衰感到好奇
这个家族必定鼎盛一时，所以才能够挥金如土，修建这么多summer "cottage"
但追踪没落，使得他们无法持续拥有这些豪宅而选择赠送给preservation society。

不知道Chinaman啥意思打死我也不信。Chinaman就类似于Nigger一样，最早黑人被称为
Negro，因为拉丁语里面Niger是黑的意思，没有太多贬义，但是后来因为黑人是奴隶社

是非常惬意的。 那边还有泡温泉的，以前PingLore组织过，但我不认识野鼠，所以也
没去。很多火车站也很有特色。 拿Richmond Amtrak Station (Virginia)来说，我有
次去那边看毕加索的画展，看完后，做火车回北维，正好看到火车站里边2楼有人包了
场在那举行婚礼， 呵呵。

下面是我女儿在高中三年级（2015-2016学年）选修高中《美国历史大学先修课》（AP
American History）时所写的学期论文（junior thesis）。本地高中学生一般公认高
中文科最具挑战的课程就是《美国历史大学先修课》。我女儿总体上比较爱好理工科课
程，对我这个文科专业的父亲来说，总觉得高中文科的课程也是极有意义的。然而我女
儿是一名多年参加体操俱乐部系统训练（每周要有20多小时的体操训练，还要加上外出
参加比赛的时间）的运动员，因此对选修这门阅读量很大的美国历史大学先修课程颇有
顾虑。我考虑到这门课程的对女儿的阅读，思维和写作都有很大帮助，就极力鼓励她选
修这门课程，并且“保证”如果学期成绩只能获得B也不会有所“责难”。最后女儿“
不知深浅”地选修了这门高中文科重头课程，即使在就读期间她还一直有点“耿耿于怀
”。
这门美国历史的大学先修课的教师是一位从非洲移民过来的具有博士学位的50多岁的教
师，该教师虽然在美国生活数十年，但是他的英语口音仍然比较重，虽然女儿说她并不

自从美国第一辆蒸汽机火车1830年在东部港口城市巴尔的摩(Baltimore，MD)首次上轨
后，仅20年里铁路线就很快连接东岸诸大城市。1849年加州淘金潮开始，淘金者从世界
各地涌入。北从墨西哥，南到智利的拉丁美洲国家，沿西岸航行北上，可谓近水楼台；
太平洋对岸的中国，从香港开船，一到两月时间到达旧金山。但对当时居住在密西西比
河以东地区的美国人而言，到达加州困难重重，有陆地和水路两个选择。
陆路从密苏里到加州，走后来历史上著名的加州小道(California Trail, Oregon
Trail)，三千多公里，耗时四五个月。翻山越岭、穿草原、涉溪水、越沙漠、加上途中
极限气候和印地安人的袭击，十分之一死在路上。水路航行相对安全但耗时更长，从大
西洋向南或先水路到达墨西哥湾，向南航行到美洲几乎最南端的哈特拉斯角(Cape Horn
)，再调头向北沿太平洋岸边一直到达旧金山，但这要半年以上。缩短水路航程的一个
办法就是航行到中美州东岸，下船后乘马车或坐驴车，冒着被染上黄热病和其它疾病的
