发帖数: 669 | 1 Three of us went to Rainier Friday after work. We rested in the Paradise
picnic area for a couple of hours before heading up right after midnight,
intending to climb Kautz Glacier as a day climb (in the strict sense -
starting and finishing on the same calender day).
We made good time initially but after 10k, we were getting slower and slower
as drowsiness and effect of altitude started to get us. We didn't get to
12k, top of the technical section until after 11am.
Beyond 12k, things got interesting. Being the hottest day of the year and
being slow late on upper mountain, the snow was extremely soft. We had a
terrible time (or exciting time, depending how you want to see it) with
crevasses. We punctured through so many snow bridges and hidden crevasses
that I lost count of them. In one particular spot, I had to crawl to go past
a hidden crevasse after nearly falling into it. The going was extremely
slow.
We topped out at 4pm and waited till 6pm to go down, hoping it could cool
down a bit for better snow condition and safer descent. We went down by DC
route and reached Paradise at 11:30pm.
This is my 10th Rainier summits via 8 different routes and is my last
Rainier climb (unless my kids want to climb it and want me to lead them). |
