w****1 发帖数: 4931 | 13 You are not the only one who thinks so. A female colleague of mine was
trying to BQ in her first marathon last year, and I told her that it'll be a
piece of cake for her considering her speed (6:40 10K pace). Her response
was that the BQ standard for women is too easy, in other words, she didn't
want to compare herself with only the female BQ standard. She ended up with
3:23 in her first marathon.
However, there is clear physical difference which determines that women
cannot run nearly as fast as men in comparable condition. If you require
women to BQ with the same standard as men, then Boston marathon will consist
of 99% men each year because extremely few women would make it. The US
Olympic marathon trial qualification standard is 2:22 for men and 2:47 for
women. That's almost one minute per mile difference in pace. Even elite
female marathoners cannot last a 5K at the pace of elite male marathoners.
If women were discriminated against, they would not be allowed to compete in
races, like decades ago. Putting men and women in separate divisions is out
of respect and protection for women, because it is simply not fair to let
men compete against women (who have to deal with things men don't deal with
in life).

c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 20 I totally agree with you. There are physical barriers that can't be overcome
by will power. However, if you follow this line of reasoning, you can also
argue that everyone is genetically different. If you can draw a line along
gender, you can also draw the line along race. Africans clearly have an
advantage in track and field.
I'm not saying that I agree with this argument. It's just for the sake of
argument :)

There are interesting old pictures in this link.
Women were officially allowed to race Boston M in 1972.
The Women's Marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California
(USA) was held on August 5, 1984. It was the first ever marathon for women
in the history of the Olympic Games.

w****1 发帖数: 4931 | 24 come on, the difference between races is still quite small by this kind of
measurement. The marathon record is
2:03:59 for Africans, 2:06:17 for US born runners, and 2:06:16 for east Asians.
The gap is just over 2 minutes. The
gap between male and female marathoners would be typically 20 minutes or
more. I have no problem of
having women competing in the same division as men, but then all the elite
female runners will be out of jobs.

w****1 发帖数: 4931 | 30 sure. 2 minutes is huge at the elite level. even alberto salazar says that
there are far more talents in distance running in east africa than in the
western countries, and so while the kenyan and ethiopian runners simply
train as hard as they can and the strongest survive, in the US they have to
protect and grow the elite runners with smart training and all the
technology available.
