Richmond 中心城区犯罪率比较高,不建议居住
建议居住在Glen Allen, 或南边的west end (part of richmond city and Midlothian

Glen Allen 是全美100佳社区之一(Top100 best place to live),
这里有很多华人,老印,老白居住
房价也是地区最贵的,是Chestefield 的两倍
学区也比较好
Midlothian,VA 在Richmond 的西南部
大家印象学区不很好
但是在今年的Pesident's Fellow(全美杰出高中毕业生),
Glen Allen只有一个,Midlothian高中有两个(全美125名,VA 6名)
足见Midlothian高中教育还是很强的
Richmond City School 很差,每年高中毕业大概2个去VCU,一个去Univ of Richmond,
所以不建议大家在这里买房
你在哪上学是根据你的property line 在哪个学区里,所以即便你在Glen Allen住,也
要问清是属于哪个学校的。

• Frommer's Top Destinations for 2014;
• Departures magazine's Next Great American Food City in September
2014;
• Outside magazine's Best River Town in America for 2012;
• BuzzFeed’s ranking of cities you should explore on two wheels,
ranking fourth of 10; and
• America's most content metropolitan area, according to the U.S.
National Bureau of Economic Research.
Richmond is also home to the top Great American Beer Bar (Mekong), according
to CraftBeer.com. And Bon Appetit ranks Strangeways Brewing Co. as one of
10 new U.S. breweries to watch in 2014.
Even if you thought you knew Richmond, the old city has a lot of surprises.
And if you're a first-time visitor for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships
, the big challenge may be what to leave out - not just in the city itself
but also nearby.
But first, a bit of geography may help.
Richmond sits at the falls of the James River, as far inland as the first
permanent English settlers in America could travel when they arrived in 1607
. They settled downriver at Jamestown, but their second attempt at creating
a city was at Henricus in the Richmond metro area.
The city's location continues to pay dividends. Within a two-hour drive of
Richmond are Atlantic Ocean beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, old family
farms in the countryside and new national attractions in Washington.
The metropolitan area is home to 1.3 million people and six Fortune 500
companies, so there's also support for a vibrant hometown culture that
ranges from nationally ranked museums and gardens to NASCAR auto racing.
Here's a look at must-see, must-do Richmond.
On the river
Bicyclists aren't the only people who appreciate life outside. Water
activities also have a big audience in Richmond.
"I never thought I'd want to own a kayak until I moved here, and now I want
a kayak - soon," said Greg Houser, who moved to the city last summer to
write the RVA blog for Richmond Region Tourism.
You don't have to own a kayak to enjoy the river, though. Riverside
Outfitters' guided rafting and kayaking trips go through the only Class II
to Class IV whitewater rapids to be found in the middle of a major U.S. city
. The journey begins in wooded sections where the riverbank is a natural
park and ends in the middle of downtown.
On the eastern edge of the city, the river flattens out into a tidal stream
where fishermen can try their luck from shore or on boats launched from
several public access points.
Remnants of the canal system that once powered mills and carried goods west
are now a place for canal boat rides with narrators of city history.
In the restaurants
If you think oysters are oysters, then you haven't been to Rappahannock, one
of Richmond's new trend-setting restaurants. Here you'll learn that
oysters from the Rappahannock River taste sweeter than the salty oysters
from the Atlantic Ocean, because you can sample them side by side. And then
you can compare those with Chesapeake Bay oysters for another variation in
salinity.
It's just one of the restaurants that helped Richmond earn the distinction
of "The Next Great American Food City" from Departures magazine in August.
Huffington Post named Richmond one of "8 Under-the-Radar Foodie Cities" in
September. Chef Lee Gregory at The Roosevelt was named one of 30 chefs to
watch by Plate magazine in September, and the restaurant was the only one in
Virginia picked by Thrillist for its 13 "best restaurants in the South."
Travel + Leisure gave the Black Sheep the No. 8 spot on its list of best
huevos rancheros in the U.S.
Four local restaurants - Comfort, Heritage, Peter Chang China Cafe and The
Roosevelt - were among Southern Living's 100 best in the South, and Metzger
Bar & Butchery was one of its 12 new restaurants to watch.
Unassuming longtime favorites such as Millie's Diner and Mamma 'Zu also fan
the foodie passion, as do the more "important" settings at Amuse in the
stunning Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Lemaire restaurant at the
acclaimed Jefferson Hotel.
And don't get us started on bakeries like Sub Rosa, WPA and Proper Pie. Or
the doughnuts at Sugar Shack, one of the country’s 10 best according to USA
Today.
Prices are reasonable too. Expect most entrees to be $30 or less.
Richmond 2015: What to do in Richmond after dark
With only nine days in Richmond, attendees of the Worlds aren’t going to
have any trouble finding things to do in town, but instead, packing
everything Richmond has to offer into the short visit.
On tap
The past year has been the best ever for Richmond's craft beer industry,
Times-Dispatch beer columnist Lee Graves concluded in 2014.
At the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Richmond's Hardywood Park won
the area's first gold medal for a local beer, Raspberry Stout. Strangeways
Brewing drew praise for its rum-barrel-aged Soledad and sours. Lickinghole
Creek's Rosemary Saison won a fan who called it the top beer of the festival.
Stone Brewing Co. of San Diego chose Richmond for its first East Coast
facility. The Stone facility won’t open until November of 2015, but company
president Steve Wagner said the choice of Richmond was “about the site and
the vibe we get from being here."
Brew pubs have opened right and left. One of the best beer bars in the
country is at Mekong Restaurant (three-time winner at craftbeer.com).
"Whew!" Graves wrote. "No wonder Stone wants a piece of the action."
On the trail
Local gardens and historic sites have collaborated on three trails that link
some of the region's assets.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Maymont are the two biggest stars on The
Richmond Garden Trail, along with unexpected pleasures at places like the
Edgar Allan Poe Museum.
The botanical garden ranked second on a readers' choice of the nation's 10
best public gardens by USA Today in 2014 and was included in "10 North
American Gardens Worth Traveling For" by BBC Travel in 2013.
During the world bicycle races, it will highlight the early use of its
campus as the Lakeside Wheel Club with an exhibit of vintage bicycles and
eight interpretive panels. “Women and Fashion in the Bicycle Boom”
includes a quote by Susan B. Anthony that bicycling "has done more to
emancipate women than anything else in the world.”
Maymont grew out of a Gilded Age estate that was willed to the city as a
park. Its Japanese Garden, one of a half-dozen in the country that predate
World War I, was included in the 2013 book, "Quiet Beauty: The Japanese
Gardens of North America" by Kendall Brown. "I say this is really a good one
," Brown said when he visited Maymont in 2012. "Just because it hasn't been
famous is a mistake of history."
The Liberty Trail links dozens of historic sites in the downtown area on a
route that stretches more than 5 miles and covers more than 400 years of
history. Highlights include:
• The Virginia State Capitol, which was designed by Thomas Jefferson;
• Historic Tredegar, a Civil War ironworks on the riverfront that
interprets Civil War history;
• Neighborhoods such as Church Hill (home of historic St. John's
Church), Court End (home to the White House of the Confederacy and The
Valentine city museum) and Jackson Ward (home of Maggie L. Walker National
Historic Site and other black history sites).
The Richmond Slave Trail focuses on the years leading up to the Civil War,
when Richmond was the largest North American slave trading center north of
New Orleans. Lumpkin's Jail, one of the most notorious slave holding pens,
and the Reconciliation Statue are significant features of both trails.
In the museums
Richmond is a city of museums – really good museums.
Several of the best are on or near The Boulevard just 2.5 miles west of
downtown. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Historical
Society fill most of three blocks between Grove and Kensington avenues. The
Science Museum of Virginia and Richmond Children's Museum are nearby on
Broad Street.
VMFA reopened in 2010 after a $150 million, four-year expansion that won
international praise for its architecture by London-based Rick Mather and
won it a spot among the 10 largest comprehensive art museums in the country.
Attendance more than tripled in the first year.
The top floor of the 1985 wing reopened in January to showcase Impressionism
, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The famed Fabergé collection will be on tour
during the race, but artistry of a different sort will be on display during
the race with the traveling exhibition "Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo
Tradition in a Modern World." Other strong collections include Ancient,
European, African, and Modern & Contemporary art.
The Virginia Historical Society will reopen in 2015 after a $20 million
renovation that includes a retelling of "The Story of Virginia."
The Science Museum will lead up to the race with a summer-long traveling
exhibit, "Bikes: Science on Two Wheels."
At the heart
Creativity and contentment don't necessarily go together, but both are at
the heart of Richmond, named in 2013 as one of the "10 Up and Coming Cities
for Entrepreneurs" by Forbes.com and among the "50 Best U.S. Cities for
Employment Satisfaction" by Glassdoor.
The Institute of Contemporary Art under construction at Virginia
Commonwealth University will be a welcoming beacon of creativity that
complements the award-winning VCU art school.
Some of the best creative minds in advertising work at the city's Martin
Agency, which made the Advertising Age top-10 list of the world's most-award
-winning ad agencies in 2013. The Brand Center at VCU taps into that talent
to train award-winners of the future.
The contentment scale reflects the comparative ease of life in a mid-size
city, where the daily commute is brief, housing is affordable and amenities
are plentiful.
Entertainment is abundant at venues such as The National, Richmond
CenterStage, the Altria Theater, Virginia Repertory Theatre, The Camel and
The Broadberry. Many weekends offer festivals that range from high-energy
outdoor sports at Dominion Riverrock to eclectic music at the Richmond Folk
Festival.
"It's got this really good feeling where it's got all these amenities of a
big city without a lot of the stress of a big city," Houser said. He
remembers his first impression.
"There was a festival the first weekend I moved here (the Bacon Festival)
and the three weekends after that," he said. "I was walking around eating
bacon and drinking beer and smiling so hugely."
Top 5 places to road and mountain bike in Richmond area
With all the professional cyclists coming to Richmond, we decided to share
some of the best places to road bike and mountain bike in the Richmond
region.
On a short drive
Williamsburg, Charlottesville and Fredericksburg are an hour away to the
east, west and north. Petersburg is a half-hour to the South. Each has its
own distinctive appeal.
Williamsburg goes back to the beginning arguments over what the United
States should be. Before the Revolutionary War, it was the seat of Colonial
government. Dozens of historic buildings include the 300-year-old Bruton
Parish Church (still an active parish) and the Wren Building at the College
of William and Mary (second oldest in the country). Colonial Williamsburg
has preserved dozens of buildings in the Historic Area and reconstructed
copies of the Capitol and Governor's Palace preserve the feel of a time when
men wore stockings and knee-length breeches. For a break from the past, you
can shop for a bargain in the outlet malls or go for thrills at the
amusement parks on the outskirts of town.
Charlottesville is where Thomas Jefferson built his home, Monticello, and
his school, the University of Virginia. Each has a classic beauty and offers
insights into an inventive mind, which produced a seven-day clock, a double
-pen writing instrument, a home that's a UNESCO World Heritage site and a
world-changing Declaration of Independence. Rolling hills lead to the Blue
Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Fredericksburg is about halfway to Washington, D.C., just before the typical
traffic delays begin on the way to the nation's capital. George Washington,
the nation's first president, spent his childhood at Ferry Farm on the
north side of the river. The simple home he bought for his mother, Mary
Washington, and the elaborate Kenmore estate where his sister, Betty, lived
with her husband, Fielding Lewis, are open for tours. Intense Civil War
battles in 1862, 1863 and 1864 are commemorated at the Fredericksburg and
Spotsylvania National Military Park.
Petersburg was the gateway to Richmond at the end of the Civil War in 1865.
Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant chipped away at Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's
defenses and supply lines during a nine-month siege of the city. Petersburg
National Battlefield and Pamplin Historical Park tell the story that
included digging a tunnel under Confederate lines to blast an opening (
unsuccessful) and the final breakthrough that reunited the country and
brought freedom to 4 million African-Americans who had been enslaved.
Confederate government officials evacuated Richmond, and a week later Lee
surrendered at Appomattox.
If you want to venture a little farther, Washington, D.C., is 100 miles to
the north, the beautiful fall foliage of the Blue Ridge Parkway is 90 miles
to the west, and the warm water of the Atlantic Ocean is 100 miles to the
east (average water temperature in Virginia Beach in September is about 75
degrees).

Study says more per capita than anywhere in the United States
To no one’s surprise, Richmond ranks No. 1 in the nation for grocery stores
per capita, accoding to WalletHub.
How reliable is this statistic? The website says it compiles customer
reviews about financial institutions and the services they offer—it’s sort
of a Yelp for money. It turned its eye to the food industry to see how
cities measure up when it comes to your wallet.
“To find the cheapest culinary scenes in the U.S.,” the website says, “
WalletHub compared the 150 most populated cities across two key dimensions,
including affordability, and diversity, accessibility and quality."
Besides ranking first in grocery stores, Richmond also ranks No. 7 for the
most ice cream and frozen yogurt shops per capita, No.11 in craft breweries
and wineries, and comes in at No. 27 for the amount of restaurants per
capita.
Overall, Richmond ranks No. 11 in food and drink affordability, diversity
and quality. Portland was the big winner, coming in at No. 1. (Not much of a
surprise either.)

National Geographic Traveler picked the top six places in the world for food
travelers in 2016 and - spoiler alert - Richmond topped the magazine's list.
Again, Richmond topped the list of places for people to travel to for food,
as selected by those reputable travelers at National Geographic.
The list also include places such as Tokyo, New Orleans, Peru and Morocco.
The editors "scoured the globe to bring you the top destinations to satisfy
your every craving. Whether you're hungry for exotic cuisine or thirsty for
a cold one."
Richmond was selected as being one of the founders of Southern American food.
"Richmond’s blend of English, Native American, and African-American
influences help the city stand out" among Southern food cities, according to
the magazine.
Heritage, Rappahannock and The Roosevelt were recommended as places to eat
and the beer and booze scene - Strangeways Brewing, Ardent Craft Ales, Stone
Brewing, Hardywood Park Craft Brewing and Blue Bee Cider specifically, was
touted as well.

Southern cuisine can trace its roots back to Virginia, home of the first
permanent settlements in the American South. While nearby Washington, D.C.,
and southern culinary titan Charleston, South Carolina, are both regarded
among the U.S.’s best food cities, Richmond’s blend of English, Native
American, and African-American influences help the city stand out.
Chefs in this capital city with plenty of charm are now whipping up southern
cuisine with a contemporary flair. Simultaneously, purveyors are
rediscovering colonial-era Virginia ingredients like local peanuts, old-
fashioned country ham, and seafood from the Chesapeake Bay. Those in the
industry are also taking notice of their booming craft brewery scene. Local
brewers such as Ardent Craft Ales and Strangeways Brewing have made a name
for themselves, while Colorado-based Stone Brewing Company plans to undergo
a massive expansion to the city in early 2016.
What to Eat: Indulge in pork “fries”—deep-fried logs of pulled pork—at
trendy Heritage and try Chesapeake Bay oysters at Rappahannock, products of
a recently restored population (although the populations are still suffering
). You can get peanut butter pie or an appetizer of pimento cheese, BBQ pork
rinds, and pickles at the Roosevelt, run by local restaurateur Kendra
Feather.
What to Drink: It’s said that Thomas Jefferson considered cider a necessary
table drink. Artisan cider, with as many subtleties and nuances as wine, is
currently undergoing a revival in the third president’s beloved home state
. Visit the tasting room at Blue Bee Cider in downtown Richmond to try their
rotating selection of small-batch ciders.
Edible Souvenir: Stop by Belmont Butchery for some of owner Tanya Cauthen’s
famous handcrafted bacon. It’s cured simply with salt, sugar, and spices
and then smoked over hickory wood.
Food Experience: Explore the city’s thriving craft beer scene with Richmond
Brewery Tours. Tickets include round-trip transportation, complimentary
snacks, a guided tour of one of the breweries, and a tasting flight at three
different breweries. Tours are given Thursday through Sunday.
Cultural Tip: You will sometimes see country ham called Virginia or
Smithfield ham on Richmond restaurant menus. This traditional product is
cured with salt and seasonings and then hung to dry in a smokehouse for
several months.
Fun Fact: Mary Randolph of Richmond published one of the earliest southern
cookbooks in 1824. The Virginia Housewife contains some of the first written
recipes for classic dishes like fried chicken, stewed okra, and corn bread.
Staff Tip: Richmond is all about the beer scene right now. Stone Brewing, a
popular West Coast staple, is planning to open its first facility on the
East Coast in the Greater Fulton area of Richmond in early 2016, adding to
the list of well-established brewers in the area. Their plans include a
brewery, packaging hall, and farm-to-table restaurant. Looking for something
more immediate? Richmond is also home to Hardywood Park Craft Brewery,
where you can sample award-winning libations, including my personal favorite
—the Great Return, a West Coast-style India pale ale. Head to their
tasting room every Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. for seasonal drafts and their
year-round food-truck court. —Megan Heltzel Weiler, @MeganHeltzel, producer
