新帝国论概述
“帝国”、“新帝国”乃至“新帝国主义”，其实都不是什么新概念。在西方国家
，特别是美国，近来人们之所以热烈地讨论这一话题，文章铺天盖地，首先是缘于“9
·11”事件，其后则是因为发生了伊拉克战争。美国在伊拉克取得的令人敬畏的胜利，
在知识分子圈子里再度点燃了有关“美利坚帝国”的争论。1在媒体的专栏中，认为美
国是“新罗马”（"new Rome"）的评论连篇累牍。当然，这些文章中绝大多数是持批判
性观点，但也确有一些人越来越愿意接受一个他们先前曾激烈反对过的思想，即他们的
国家是一个帝国。他们渴望相信这样一点，即存在着一种新型帝国，而这种帝国对美国
和世界都是有益的。

princess还有公主的意思，容易混淆，不适合用来翻译妃嫔，看来只有在concubine上
动脑筋。
常在和答应兼有妃嫔的女侍的角色，用courtesan来翻译比较合适。
可以考虑以下方案：

不过：妃=Princess？当然，中国这个搞法西方没对应的也是没办法。
courtesan就本意讲，应该比concubine高一些。西方封建制下，政府王家合二为一，在
court里面为王室服务的都可以称为是courtier。到文艺复兴的意大利，女性的
courtier，cortigiana（法语的courtisane，再转回英国就是courtesan了）就多指统
治者的情妇了。在后来就成了活动于上层社会的妓女。Concubine一直指的就是没法律
地位的小老婆，比中国的妾怕是还没法律保障。Consort就不一样了，本意就是合法伴
侣。王后在英语里的全称就是Queen Consort（和女王Queen Regent相对应）。Consort
这个翻译不好。Mistress的地位更疏远，地位最低基本合理。
